In this clip there is a clear representation of age and gender shown. The 3 characters of Freddie, JJ and cook portray the stereotype of teenage boys only interested in sex drugs and boozing.Middle age man (Effys dad) a typical working man in a suite. The elderly women being portrayed as slow and unaware of teenagers antics.

The opening scene of the clip shows the representation of gender through the close up of the skate board, this is usually associated with a boys Hobby. The close up also focusing on the trainers as boys are seen as wearing training all the time whereas girls will have feminine shoes such as heels, sandals. The take is purposely long and one minute in shows the face of character this is to create suspense over the character. The use of the close up on his feet is to show that he is comfortable on the skate board, shown by the fast pace and quick cuts. The text is the first example of another character being introduced and giving us an indication of what he may be like as well as Freddie. The Close up on the text gives us an insight on what the character may be like and who `cook’ is. The language in the text saying Spliff shows us that they are into drugs and use swearing as an everyday language to address each other. The close up of Freddie lets the audience see his emotions and his reaction to the text.

The use of high and low angles created in the skating scene creates suspense for the audience making them contemplate what will happen next. The angles also show us that the character riding the skate board has done this before due to the tricks that are shown and dodging of the bus and lorry. The scenes with Freddie skating and stopping are all matched cuts which will portray the verisimilitude as it engages the audience to follow him.

The Scene with JJ cook and Freddie is made up of cuts from each of the characters faces portraying there conversation and reactions towards each others comments. Their behaviour is reflected of there age and gender. Cook drinking at early hours of the morning and smoking links into the stereotype that all teenagers live there lives care free and don’t dwell on consequences of there actions. There is also the stereotype that men can hold down a drink more than women, cook fits into this due to his consumption of 4 pints of larger.

The next scene is the car accident of Effys and her dad. The cross cut of the 3 boys having an conversation and the car crashing is used to make the scene more interesting to the viewer not knowing were it will cut to first. Effys dad represented age and gender fitting into the stereotype of a middle aged working man, his clothes being dressed in a suite ready for work. However audience don’t expect him to come out with language such as `fuck’ or `bollocks’ this is to shock the audience and show his characters true colours. The close up of Effys dad is used to amuse the audience. The reaction shot is used to show his emotions after it happen showing him very angry and unaware of why it happened. Cutting to cooks reaction of the incident it represents his age as he finds it funny and is amused by Effys dad. This shows that teenagers usually don’t take anything seriously there immaturity and thinking of themselves most of the time.

In the Lat scene the representation of age is shown through the elderly women she is taken back as he asks what happened and is shocked at the way to Effys dads speaks towards her. He asks if she has a mobile and her reply as no. links into the stereotype that old people don’t know anything about technology. The 180 rule is placed in with the conversation between the elderly women and Effys dad this is to keep it realistic.

The characters are all portrayed by the technical aspects of editing such as close ups, cuts, long takes and invisible editing where all used to portray the representations of gender and age. Stereotypes were used in the clips of teenager, middle aged and elderly showing us that not just young people are labelled but different generations can label each others behaviour. Most of the cuts were to show the emotions of the different characters. All the editing in the clip was to represent the characters differently by the ay in which it was edited.The opening scene plays on the stereotypes of gender and how the auidience will interpret these stereotypes as negative or positive in how and were they are portrayed.

Freak Analysis
Representation of Gender



In the clip the representation of gender is shown through the characters characteristics. The male characters are stereotyped to be interested in just girls party's and video games whereas the girls are depicted as being quite naive not as important.

The character of `freak' (Lucy) is lonely and not included with the rest of the characters. Her conversation with her brother shows her age as he talks about her being his little sis. This shows his protective behaviour over her and stereotype of girls having to be protected and watched whereas boys aren't seen to have to be protected as much due to there male persona.

The Character of Freak(Lucy) step brother is cocky and only thinks bout his own feeling. This links in with the Negative stereotype of boys just being interested in there social life of sex, parties and video games. His attitude towards his step sister is negative and doesn’t want to include her in anything to do with his life, treats her as if she is a nuisance to be around. The scene were this is shown is when he takes a picture of her smiling on his phone as making a reference to making his mum know that he is looking after when Cleary he cant be bothered. This fits in with the stereotype of boys having a lazy attitude.

The Girls in the party show a stereotype of always being on competition with one another wanting to look better than the other and were the guy’s girlfriends comes over the other girls acts as if she hasn't done anything wrong. This is showing a negative view of girl’s relationships with one another being a competitive and jealous usually over the boys.

The character of the girl who kisses the boy with the guitar is showing a negative view of girls showing they are easy and will end up with anyone at the party as long as it’s someone. This is shown in two scenes were she is just about to kiss the step brother but then ends up kissing the other boy in the water. Her character is generalising all girls to be like this and not portraying if she did truly like the two boys.

Overall the clip shows a clear division between the two genders stereotyping the boys to only be interested in parties’ girls and video games and girls to be moody, easy and in competition with one another, with the exception of Freak(Lucy) who shows a more realistic depiction of some teenager girls struggling with self confidence and not fitting in.

Our first type of synergy we would like to use is Product placement.We will use the company Adidas for the clothes of our two characters, extras and signs in the film advertising it.The audience it will appeal to will be young people who like to look sporty and trendy and up are up to date with the fashion.The second Company we will use for product placement is T-Mobile this will be used for scenes were the characters call each others e.g welcome to t-mobile voicemail service. This will appeal to people interested in technology and t-mobiles general services.We will use commercial synergy for Burger king.This will be used to advertise for the audience to want to eat there and use scenes were the boys are eating the food from the restaurant.

The Director we will hire is Noel Clarke who directed KIdulthood and Adulthood.To have him it will cost 100,00.We Will be guaranteed a good director with a goo style and fit the brief that we want for our film.the film were successful however were not widely known around a big audience.We will use a Professional production team at 50,000 we will be guaranteed a good quality of producers making are film more appealing however it may not look as good as a Hollywood film with action scenes in it.We will also hire a profession editor at cost of 50,00 this will as to the quality and excitement of the film however it may takeaway from the verisimilitude of the characters.We will hire a amateur but trained British special effects team t a cost of 10.00 this Will be good as their are only to scenes were special effects may need to be used.However it many not come out the way we in visioned it e.g not having the excitement factor that we pictured.

CAMERA

The Camera we will use is a song-dv-00177.We will get 5 of these at a cost of 2,499 each.They are good quality cameras, easy to use,portable and able to attached a tripod.However it is quiet expensive.
The tapes we will use are hd dv tape.50 tapes will cost £400 it is a cheaper deal than the other kind of tapes we looked at however it might not be the best option as the tapes wont last as long.
The computer we will use is the 17 inch mac at a cost of 1,1490 it is good quality however it is expensive to use and doesn't come with the software.
The editing software we will use is Adobe after effects mac at a cost of £587 It is good software material to get the best outcome possible and is able to be portable done. however it is time consuming to use and is expensive for what it is.

Skins Mise-En-Scene

The main representation in the clip is age this is reflected in the visual representations of young people and how they are stereotyped into being ungrateful, disobedience and living the party life of sex drugs and alcohol. The characters in the clip fit this stereotype and show the audience it is part of there everyday lifestyle.

The Colour design in the clip was set to reflect the characters state of mind Cass wakes up with the bright green cover over her showing us a neon primary colour. The design had prints and cartoon style on it showing us childlike patterns. There are a lot of mixers of colours from darker pastels to the neon primary this can show there mind set being hectic from the night before and Cass in particular being the only one up and already knowing what to come. The colours are all representative of the individuals characters e.g. Anwar in white showing his religious side, Cassie in quite dull unnoticeable colours, and Michelle and tony in the bed were there was bright colours on her bed covers to show there lively personalities.

The Lighting used in the clip was ambient natural lighting this helps create atmosphere of the `morning after' and verisimilitude. This help show us the daytime and makes it look vibrant and appealing which contrast with the characters current state.The lighting changes to artificial to show the teenagers being full of life and energy.

The actor’s performances were used to show the representation of age in the clip. The actress playing Cass is very thin this is shown through production design as she is only wearing small bland underwear, when she wakes up showing us her thin frame this gives us an indication of her mental of physical health. Cass’s character is a specific casting role as they won’t to show Cass as teenager fitting the stereotype of teenage girls suffering from weight problems. Cass character is quite and reserved and in the scene were Michelle mum comes back she doesn’t tell her that the house has been trashed but just acts normal and sweet fitting her quite persona and reluctant to talk them. Michelle mother is seen as naive and oblivious to what her daughter has been up to. She is also perceived as quite snobby and having a younger husband makes her feels a higher level than everyone else. Michelle and the other characters are taking advantage and connoting to the audience that they are becoming more intelligent than their parents. The character Anwar is shown as being the undercover rebel. He is committed to his religion but doesn’t want to live by the rules and regulations he’s stated to abide by. Michelle character is shown to not care about anyone but herself or tony. From the dialogue she uses to address Cassie as a `crazy bitch’ showing that Cassie isn’t really noticed much by her friends and shows the similarities with the state of her bodies.

Production design is used in the clip is mostly around the set of the house and what condition it is. The house is wrecked because of the party so people laying everywhere some naked, food and drink scattered, writing all over the walls and kiss marks all over peoples bodies. This setting fits the stereotype of teenagers having wild parties with sex drugs and alcohol. They don’t seem to notice the mess around them showing that teenagers are oblivious to any mess or responsibilities to clear up. The outside if house is shown to be clean. The outside garden area is shown to well groomed and taken care of. The scene were Michelle’s Mum says she’s having a meeting about her new curtains shows that Michelle’s mother status and how she takes pride in the interea of the home and appearance. Michelle’s behaviour contrasts this as she couldn’t care less if the house got trashed or not.

In conclusion the use of Clap in skins enhances the representations of age and the stereotypes of teenage behaviour. The characters all fit the perception of drugs alcohol and sex being the main attraction to teenagers in this generation now.

Compare and contrast 24 hour party people production to that of Hollywood film


I will look at how being produced by a independent production company effects the quality and appeal of the film and how this differs to a Hollywood blockbuster.
24 hour party people was produced by film four, chanel4 films, baby cow, film council, wave pictures. All these who were involved in the production of the film are all Independent companies. This will effect the institutional factors and how the companies fit to there ethos e.g. film four having a significant ethos related to showing a diverse viewing for there audiences. This allows they to take risks in what and how they display there film and how it will challenge the audience. Hollywood would differ as it the films would of been produced by one of the big six Hollywood film companies guaranteed with big well known directors and producers whereas film four are meant to use upcoming directors and producers to show and scout for new talents in the film industry.
The target audience was aimed at adults between the ages of 18-50 .This age range is quite broad as it is set in the 80s the year of punk rock and the introduction of new bands that would be well known today. The older audience will be able to relate to this era being brought up with the music being fans and seeing the bands live. This gives the audience a time for reminiscing on there teenage years growing up with great music. The target audience for a Hollywood would be different as it will be a bigger range of ages to appeal to a family audience.the Hollywood want to keep their reputation as producers of family orientation films.They wouldn't jump to the opportunity to use a unknown director doing such films similar to trainspotting or this is England.
In an independent film you wouldn’t see much new media technology used however in some of the scenes were Tony day dreams and has hallucinations, he sees himself as god and the scene with the pigeons. These were done by special effects to create a different world and show it is far from reality reflecting his mind set. This is not typical for an independent to have such special effects due to the budget and not being able to wanting to affect the impact of the verisimilitude. They used basic sound techniques such as Foley sound, sound from the bands and music playing in the clubs, sound to creating crowd noise for laughter, talking, shouting and screaming. The editing was fast paced and a lot of quick cuts this was to reflect the pace of the film and the characters having hectic lifestyle, there on and off music careers going from highs to lows and them always re inventing themselves as artists. In a typical Hollywood film to engage the audience they would add special effects and graphics to make the film more exciting. The sounds and music will be synchronous to reflect the mood of the film whereas in 24 hour party people some scenes were they were unhappy used songs which were up beat and lively which wasn’t reflecting the characters state of mind.
Use of synergy in the film was making the samples of bands fro the 80s including the sex pistols Happy Mondays, sex pistols, the buzz cocks, new order, the clash and other artists. Having their records included in the film made people either reconnect with there music from their youth or younger generation experience what the music used to be like. Each had to be copyright and permission by the individuals record companies.Hollywood films such as transformers will use synergy within every opportunity of the film.They used burger king, watch make, a Ferrari, jewelery and other products which they think will apply to the target audience e.g which was aimed at men.
Media convergence has helped for the film to be viewed in a broader way. It can be viewed on phones, DVD, blue ray, virgin media, independent cinemas, computers, and television. The film is guaranteed to be shown on channel4 and film four due to them producing it.This helps with the films target audience knowing that people who will watch film four will understand the humor and storyline and will know what kind of style the film will be like.
The representation of Britishness that was portrayed was the attitudes towards sex drugs alcohol, music. The film shows us how all these factors impact on each other. It is shown as a fun experience and is openly done e.g. scene were he is given sexual favours from the women and lead singer starts snorting cocaine.It shows a posstive attitudes to these bad habits adn reflecting the era were these were socially accepted by not only us but the media aswell.
In conclusion 24 hour party people represents a era of Britain were sex drugs and musics was seen and taken on as the care free attitude towards life. The way in which it was produced stuck to its ethos of what it showed taking risk with the content and not holding back from the lives of the characters and knowledge and applying it to real life things us as the audience could relate to.
