Camera

Analysis of camera in Skins series 3 episode 6 (5mins)

In the clip their is clear representation of age and gender. Stereotypes such as teenagers being interested in sex, cheating and backstabbing towards friends. The characters in the clip mostly portray these stereotypes as negative. The Representation of age is found because all the characters at at the age of 17 18 and have similar views and share the same interests.Their lives follow and similar routine e.g college parities sex alcohol. The representation of gender is shown because of the females shown to be having control over the men .e.g Tony wanting Michelle back and her standing her ground. This gender representation is shown in a positive light showing women have some power over men.

In the first scene the camera is used to build up the tension of Michele's feelings by starting with the close up of her eyes the audience is in suspense as to what she will do next. When she is walking towards Tony the camera jumps and follows her up to were she punches him across the face. It cuts to a close up showing Tony's emotional reaction towards her. This close up is used well as the audience wants to know what Tony has done wrong and if he himself knows. In the opening of this scene It is already building up the tension for the audience by focusing on just her eyes. This is a clever way of getting the audience involved and guessing what happens next by using a close up to confuse them.

The camera cuts to the other characters in the scene for their reactions, showing a contrast in attitudes e.g. some of the characters found it funny and Maxie knew why Michelle had done it.The camera work is displaying the representation of age the young adults in the clip are seen to be living a life of casual sex no strings attached and not caring if they hurt anyone along the way.

The second scene with Michelle and Angie uses mid shots to show both of the characters e.g. Michelle being sick and her confronting her when Michelle is on the phone. The mid shot is used when Angie and Chris are in the car it causes suspense for the audience as we don't know what Angie will do next. There is use of zooms and panning during the clip. This adds to the emotional state in which the character are in .e.g. Michelle’s character is unhappy ad she is unsure of what to do about tony. The quick cuts are used between each of the scenes to keep the character story lines going and keeping the audience on their toes.
.
The third scene between Tony and Sid uses over the shoulder shots to create verisimilitude. We can tell by the way Sid reacts to how sure Tony is about Michelle taking him back. The over the shoulder shots creates a realistic approach towards the characters and gives us an easy shot to tell who is speaking and causing suspense for the audience as wait for the reaction of the other character. The representation of gender and age and portrayed in this scene by the camera by the way that Sid punches Tony.

Overall throughout the clip the camera is used to create the representation of age. The uses if the quick cuts and fast pace reflect the characters mind-set and what will happen to their character as the scenario progresses. The use of mid shits over the shoulder close up Zooms and panning all create a realistic approach towards the characters and their individuals situations. It lets the audience follow there emotions and reactions towards one another. The camera techniques are there to enhance and portray the emotions of the characters and show them in different perspectives.

It would be better to summarise the different representations you have talked about and then discuss if they are accurate/ stereotypical/ negative/ positive/ biased
